Huancayo is a city located in the central Andes of Peru. It is located in the Mantaro Valley, one of the largest inter-Andean valleys in Peru. It has a population of about half a million inhabitants,
its activities are focused on agriculture and trade, surrounded by a multitude of small towns dedicated to agriculture and livestock, are famous small family industries engaged in crafts and textiles, as well as silverware.
from the area where we work
Although we developed our projects trying to include new towns and villages within the Mantaro Valley and surrounding areas, our main work focuses on Cerro Hermosa, an area located 20 minutes walk from the city of Huancayo, characterized mainly by being also place (Junin, Huancavelica, Ayacucho, Andahuaylas and central jungle), since all of them are part of the main least developed or excluded Peruvian outbreak. socially and economically called VRAE.
There have been settled these families, often numerous, who share almost the same story and situation: having to have migrated in search of a better life and give better living conditions to their children, usually parents are underemployed or working brick factories that abound in the surroundings or are looking for life in the city as day laborers and street vendors in local markets.
This area lacks the basic services of potable water and sewage, there are no health services and the health situation is extreme, ruling too many cases of chronic malnutrition infantile and maternal as well as preventable diseases with the simple basic notion of cleaning habits and environments healthy.
Socially speaking, most of these people speak the language Quechua, language of the old Inca Empire, as well as basic Spanish, have been excluded from any notion of development and when they reach these areas around cities, their way of adaptation is slow, difficult and frustrating, many individuals developing negative social habits such as alcoholism, domestic violence, sexist social practices, family abandonment and other involuntary, such as neglect in the education of children and their personal development.
It is a difficult area, with small family dwellings dotting the slopes of a great mountain, houses mostly made of mud and adobes, with domestic animals around, and endless little children playing and wallowing in the red clay dust that it abounds on the ground.
We socially intervene with the illusion of helping to give a better quality of life to the people who need it most and to see in their smiles of gratitude the only and most brilliant sample of payment that we need to continue with our direct social work here in the Andes of Peru.
